Description
This traditional African ceremonial mask originates from the Punu people of Gabon. The mask is carved from solid wood and features the elegant, idealized facial proportions for which Punu masks are renowned. The softly modeled face, almond-shaped eyes, and refined mouth convey a calm and dignified expression, often associated with beauty, harmony, and ancestral reverence.
The elaborate coiffure is crowned by a sculpted female figure seated atop the head, a powerful symbolic element linked to lineage, fertility, and spiritual protection. The surface displays a warm, naturally aged patina with traces of white pigment accentuating the facial features, consistent with traditional Punu masking practices.
The interior shows clear hand-carving marks and an old handwritten label indicating Punu, Gabon, reinforcing the authenticity of the piece. Mounted on a custom metal stand, the mask is ready for display as a sculptural object.
