A striking mixed-media religious painting depicting the Pieta, the iconic scene of the Virgin Mary cradling the body of Christ after the Crucifixion, rendered in a bold Expressionist style by Belgian artist Georges Dheedene (1909-1973).

The composition features four figures gathered around the lifeless body of Christ, painted in vivid primary colors: deep crimson, cobalt blue, and golden ochre robes, set against a heavily textured cream background with thick black contour lines that give the work a stained-glass quality.

The two central figures wear yellow halos, identifying them as the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Apostle. The figures are rendered with raw emotional intensity, a hallmark of Dheedene's mature style. The work comes accompanied by a book about the artist, adding significant provenance and collector value.

Dheedene studied at the Sint-Lucas Institute in Ghent from 1927 and later taught there. A co-founder of the painters' guild De Vierschaere in Waregem in 1938, he developed a highly personal style working with oil on paper and using a palette knife instead of a brush. His oeuvre spans Realism, Art Deco, Fauvism, and Post-Impressionism, with religious and figurative subjects among his most powerful works. At his death in 1973, he had produced over two thousand paintings and drawings.
