Description
This rare and expressive African ceremonial mask originates from the Bakwele people of Gabon. Carved from solid wood, the mask is distinguished by its striking openwork design: a smaller, serene face framed within a large surrounding structure. This sculptural construction creates a powerful sense of depth and symbolism, characteristic of Bakwele masking traditions.
The inner face displays softly modeled features with half-closed eyes and a calm, introspective expression. The surrounding outer frame, carved from the same block of wood, emphasizes protection, transition, and spiritual enclosure. Traces of natural pigments and areas of darker patina remain visible, the result of age and ritual handling.
The interior shows clear hand-tool marks and an old handwritten label indicating Bakwele, Gabon, supporting the authenticity of the piece. Mounted on a custom metal stand, the mask is presented as a sculptural object ready for display.
