Het secretairbureau, of secrétaire à abattant , ontstond in de 18e eeuw in Frankrijk als een functioneel en stijlvol meubelstuk. Onder het bewind van Lodewijk XV (1715-1774) evolueerde het ontwerp, waarbij de nadruk kwam te liggen op asymmetrie, naturalistische motieven en uitgebreide ornamenten, kenmerken van de rococo-beweging.
Dit specifieke secretair bureau heeft sierlijke verguld bronzen beslagen en is gemaakt van hoogwaardig, massief eikenhout.
