About the artist
Hans Bellmer (1902–1975) was a German artist associated with Surrealism, working across drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography. Best known for his La Poupée doll works, he explored the human body, desire and the unconscious through intricate lines and dreamlike, transformed figures. His distinctive imagery made him one of Surrealism’s most provocative voices. His work is represented in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
