This traditional African ceremonial mask originates from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. Carved from solid wood, the mask displays a highly expressive face with almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and an open mouth accentuated with dark pigmentation. The sculpted coiffure, formed by rounded volumes on the top of the head, is a characteristic feature often seen in Yoruba masking traditions.
The surface retains its original polychrome decoration in white, brown, and black pigments, showing natural wear, paint loss, and patina consistent with age and ritual use. These traces contribute to the authenticity and visual depth of the piece rather than detract from it. The interior shows clear hand-carving marks and an old handwritten label indicating Yoruba, Nigeria.
Mounted on a custom metal stand, the mask is presented as a sculptural object ready for display. It works beautifully as a statement piece in both modern and eclectic interiors, as well as within a curated collection of tribal or ethnographic art.
