Description
This traditional African ceremonial mask originates from the Punu people of Gabon. Carved from solid wood, the mask displays the refined elegance and idealized facial features that define classic Punu aesthetics. The softly contoured face, almond-shaped eyes, and delicately carved mouth convey a calm and harmonious expression associated with beauty, femininity, and ancestral reverence.
The forehead is marked with a geometric motif, while the face retains traces of white pigment that traditionally symbolized purity and the spiritual realm in Punu culture. The dark, sculpted coiffure frames the face and adds strong visual contrast. The surface shows a rich, naturally aged patina with wear consistent with ceremonial use.
The interior reveals clear hand-tool marks and an original handwritten label indicating Punu, Gabon, supporting the authenticity of the piece. Mounted on a custom metal stand, the mask is ready to be displayed as a sculptural object.
