About the Artist:
Born in Ghent in 1870, Jules De Bruycker was a distinguished graphic artist, etcher, painter, and draftsman. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent at the age of 10 but paused his formal education to assist in his family's upholstery and wallpaper business after his father's passing. He later resumed his studies under painters Théo Canell, Louis Tijtgadt, and Jean Delvin.
De Bruycker is best known for his intricate etchings that vividly portray the architecture and daily life of early 20th-century Ghent. His works often feature bustling market scenes, historic buildings, and the vibrant energy of urban life. His artistic style reflects influences from Pieter Brueghel the Elder and James Ensor, blending detailed realism with expressive character studies.
Throughout his career, De Bruycker received numerous accolades, including being knighted in the Order of Leopold in 1921. His works have been exhibited internationally, cementing his legacy as one of Belgium's foremost graphic artists.
This etching is a testament to De Bruycker's exceptional skill and offers a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of his time.
