Description
This traditional African ceremonial mask originates from the Benwa people of Cameroon. Carved from solid wood, the mask features a powerful and minimalist form, characterized by a vertically elongated face, rounded eye openings, and a pronounced central ridge. The most striking element is the sculptural crest rising from the top of the head, a distinctive feature associated with Benwa masks and their ceremonial performances.
The surface displays a deep, earthy patina with visible tool marks, surface erosion, and wear that testify to age and ritual use. The simplicity of the facial features, combined with the strong architectural silhouette, gives the mask a bold and timeless presence. The interior shows clear hand-carving marks and an old handwritten label identifying Benwa, Cameroon, supporting the authenticity of the piece.
Mounted on a custom metal stand, the mask is ready to be displayed as a sculptural object. Its raw aesthetic and strong geometry make it particularly suited for contemporary interiors or curated collections of tribal and ethnographic art.
