17th Century Polychrome Statue of Saint Laurentius

A rare and finely carved 17th-century statue of Saint Laurentius (St. Lawrence), executed in wood and retaining much of its original polychrome and gilded decoration.

Saint Laurentius, one of the most venerated early Christian martyrs, is here depicted in his deacon’s vestments, richly adorned with ornamental patterns, holding a book of the Gospels. His other hand would have originally supported his attribute, the gridiron, symbol of his martyrdom.

The expressive face, detailed carving of the drapery, and delicate traces of gilding highlight the craftsmanship of this devotional piece. At 82 cm high, the statue has a strong presence and would once have served as part of an altar or chapel ensemble.
