✨ About the Artist
Corneille was born in 1922 in Liège, Belgium to Dutch parents. He studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and became a key figure in post-war European art as a co-founder of the COBRA movement (Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam) in 1948.
His work is known for its vivid color palette, spontaneous lines, and recurring themes such as birds, women, cats, and the sun, often inspired by African art, folk motifs, and nature. After COBRA, Corneille settled in Paris, where his exposure to tribal art and travel deeply influenced his symbolic visual language. He remained active until his death in 2010.
